In primary schools a lot of attention is often put on children at the bottom of the scale or children with learning difficulties. This can leave those unassuming children in the middle of the class without some of the attention to deal with the baggage and troubles that they may be dealing with and taking with them through life.

Peer mentoring is a scheme where children in the final year of primary mentor younger children in the school who are carefully paired so that they can openly discuss their problems. The younger child benefits from the olders experience whilst the older child benefits from being able to address their own issues without the immediate emotional baggage that could come with it.

This scheme has seen truly remarkable results, and as the headteacher puts it – if young children become emotionally aware and learn about how their actions can have impacts on other peoples lives, and they take this through their lives, society may be a little different perhaps.
